Overview

The all conquering 4WD workhorses of the legendary LandCruiser range are known as the "LC 70 Series". This range includes the 4x4 Turbo Diesel Cab Chassis, Troop Carrier and the serious looking, working 4-door Wagon. Under the bonnet you'll find Toyota's first ever intercooled, turbo diesel V8 delivering a massive 430Nm of earth-shaking torque for serious towing grunt.

Exterior

Rugged good looks

Up front the gutsy design treatment tells you that this is the latest generation of the LandCruiser legend. The bodywork is wider to accommodate the bigger engine and the wider track. LandCruiser stands out from the pack with its protruding front fenders, a big front bumper that ties in just nicely with the grille design and headlamps. And that sporty bonnet scoop gives away the fact that there's an intercooler under the skin.

Come up for air

The air cleaner snorkel has been integrated to work in with the frontal design changes, so you can breathe easy when you think you're getting in over your head.

GX and GXL treatments

Over fender flares set the GX and GXL models apart, while GXL only has fog lamps built into the front bumper for those drizzly days. Also part of the extras list for GXL, the grille and front bumpers really look the part with a touch of chrome. While the other LandCruisers get steel side steps, GXLs come with aluminum ones, to give you a leg up without weighing you down.

Interior

Supportive seating for the whole crew

The WorkMate and GX comes with the ease of textured vinyl seats and vinyl floors for an easy wipe down after the dirty work's done. GXL grade comes with the added comfort of fabric seating and carpeted floors.

Creature comforts

On the inside, LandCruiser 70-series looks the goods and is easy to live with. Touches like the tidy ceiling headliner show that this LandCruiser has moved ahead in more ways than one. The no nonsense dash layout places all the controls right where you need them. So you'll notice sensible stuff like the blower unit integrated with the cooler unit on the passenger's side, for easy access.

MP3-compatible CD player gives you more

The stereo system includes a CD player with the extended playing capacity of MP3 compatibility also featuring audio input for iPod® and other MP3 player, USB input, Bluetooth™ handsfree capability and Bluetooth™audio streaming. This powerful unit pumps through two speakers in the Cab Chassis and 11 seater Troop Carrier, and four speakers in the Wagon and 5-seater Troop Carrier.

Safety

Accidental Hero

The steering wheel is collapsible, should something nasty come in your way. Also, with the strength of a tough steel body, LandCruiser 70 models help protect you. Underneath that, a full steel chassis also makes for a strong, stable platform.

Seatbelts and child restrain measures

Even in the 11 seat troop carrier, all seat positions get seatbelts. For the younger apprentices, CRS (Child Restraint System) upper tether anchors are included on the 4-door Wagon in the rear header section, so fitting child seats is a snap. Up front, Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts come standard across the range for outer positions in the front cabin for greater safety.

Four wheel disc brakes

Large, powerful disc brakes front and rear are ventilated for faster cooling and reduced fade, so LandCruiser pulls up quickly when the pressure's on. A load sensing and bypass valve helps even up the brake balance to compensate for heavy vehicle loads and help prevent rear wheel lock-up.

Immobiliser comes standard

All models come standard with an engine immobiliser, which is welcome news for your insurance company, but not for intruders.

Dual front SRS airbags

The LandCruiser 70 series comes standard with driver and front passenger SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) airbags on every model.

Mechanical

4.5 litre V8 that talks the torque

LandCruiser has more tow thanks to a quad cam, turbocharged and intercooled 4.5 litre Diesel V8 fitted as standard to every model in the range. A variable nozzle vane turbocharger ensures boost pressure continually adjusts in accordance with engine speed and other critical factors. So you have 151KW of power which is over 20% more than the previous class-leading LandCruiser 6-cylinder Turbo Diesel. As for torque, a huge 430Nm of grunt is available all the way from 1200-3200 rpm.

Durability and guts

For the first time in a Toyota engine, this V8 boasts an oil scavenging pump working in conjunction with the primary oil pump, for better lubrication. The crankshaft is engineered from special high strength carbon steel for greater durability yet light weight, with balance weights added to reduce vibration. Even the pistons are made of aluminium alloy for lighter weight and reduced friction, which improves engine efficiency.

Leaner running costs, cleaner emissions

LandCruiser puts advanced technologies to work, delivering more power from less fuel, returning 11.9L/100km for Troop Carrier and Wagon and an impressive 11.5L/100km for Cab Chassis models*. Direct injection improves fuel efficiency, roller rockers with needle bearings reduce internal friction, while water-cooled Exhaust Gas Recycling (EGR) helps reburn some of the exhaust gases. Little wonder this advanced V8 meets the strict Euro IV emissions standards, so LandCruiser will be as kind to the environment as it is to your hip pocket. (*Fuel consumption will vary depending on driving conditions/style, vehicle condition and options/accessories. Source of fuel consumption data ADR81/02 combined cycle.)

Transmission and suspension tricks

A 5-speed manual is fitted to all 70 series models, with a deep 2.488 low range that gives you more torque for towing or climbing. Smart thinking extends to a power steering system with a high capacity pump for easier manoeuverability. To help keep LandCruiser more manageable with less rock and roll, the front track is wider, and the front stabilizer bars are beefed up for greater rigidity.
